What Is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?

Person with curly hair dressed in a white blouse and red pants sitting on a red chair writing in a spiral notebook.

Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children and teens develop the “skills for the job of living.”

For kids and youth, their “occupations” include:

  • Getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating, and toileting

  • Playing, moving, and exploring their environment

  • Focusing, writing, and participating at school

  • Handling emotions, transitions, and social situations

Our pediatric occupational therapists in Edmonton look at the whole child—body, brain, emotions, and environment—to understand what is getting in the way, and how we can support regulation, independence, and confidence.

When Occupational Therapy Can Help Your Child

Sensory Processing & Regulation

  • Easily overwhelmed by noise, touch, clothing textures, or busy environments.

  • Constantly on the go, seeking movement, crashing, jumping, or spinning

  • Struggling to sit still, pay attention, or stay regulated in class

  • Melting down during transitions (leaving the house, bedtime, homework)

Fine-Motor, Coordination & Handwriting

  • Avoiding colouring, cutting, drawing, or puzzles

  • Finding handwriting slow, messy, or exhausting

  • Having trouble with buttons, zippers, shoelaces, or using utensils

  • Struggling with hand–eye coordination for sports or playground play

Daily Routines & Independence

  • Taking a long time to get ready in the morning or for bed

  • Avoiding certain foods due to texture or sensory issues

  • Having sleep routines that feel chaotic or stressful

  • Needing more support with self-care than peers their age

Emotional Regulation & Coping

  • Experiencing frequent outbursts, shutdowns, or “walking on eggshells” moments

  • Having difficulty calming down after getting upset

  • Seeming “on edge,” anxious, or easily frustrated

  • Struggling to cope with changes to routine

If any of these sound familiar, occupational therapy in Edmonton can help you understand why—and what to do next.

If so, this your teen talkspace to benefit your teenager

Play-Based & Child-Led

Kids learn best through play. Sessions feel like games, creative activities, and movement—not “appointments to fix them.”

Our Occupational Therapy Approach

Strengths-Focused & Neurodiversity-Affirming

We work with children who are autistic, ADHD, gifted, twice-exceptional, and neurodivergent in many ways. We build on what’s working rather than trying to “change who they are.”

Regulation-First

We focus on the nervous system, not just behaviour. When kids feel safe and regulated, skills begin to grow more naturally.

Family-Centred

You’re not left guessing. Parents receive coaching, practical strategies, and collaborative planning so you know how to support your child at home and school.

How does SLP Assessment & Therapy work?

1. Intake & Parent Consultation

We start with a parent-only appointment (in-person or virtual) to:

  • Understand your child’s history, strengths, and current challenges

  • Review school reports, previous assessments, and any diagnoses

  • Identify your main priorities for OT (home, school, daily routines, emotional regulation)

2. Assessment & Goal Setting

Your child’s OT may use a mix of:

  • Clinical observation during play and structured tasks

  • Standardized assessments or checklists

  • Input from teachers, daycare, or other professionals (with your consent)

Together, we set clear, meaningful goals such as:

  • “Stay regulated for morning routine without daily meltdowns”

  • “Write a short paragraph without fatigue”

  • “Tolerate more clothing textures”

  • “Use strategies instead of hitting or running away when overwhelmed”

3. Regular Therapy Sessions

Sessions are scheduled based on your child’s needs (weekly, bi-weekly, or periodic consults). We review goals regularly and adjust the plan as your child grows.

4. Parent Coaching & Collaboration

You receive:

  • Specific strategies to use in daily routines

  • Visual supports, sensory ideas, or adaptation suggestions

  • Letters or recommendations to share with school when needed

You have questions, we have answers

  • A pediatric occupational therapist in Edmonton helps children build the skills they need for everyday life—things like dressing, feeding, handwriting, attention, emotional regulation, and play. They look at sensory processing, motor skills, and the child’s environment to create a plan that supports independence and confidence.

  • You might consider OT Edmonton services if your child:

    • Struggles more than peers with self-care, routines, or transitions

    • Is very sensitive to noise, clothing, or touch—or constantly seeking movement

    • Has trouble with handwriting, scissors, or fine-motor tasks

    • Experiences frequent meltdowns, shutdowns, or difficulty calming down

If you’re unsure, booking an OT consultation can help clarify whether therapy would be helpful right now.

  • No. While both are rehabilitation professions, occupational therapists focus on helping children participate in daily activities (self-care, school, play, emotional regulation), whereas physiotherapists typically focus more on strength, mobility, and physical rehabilitation. Many families benefit from a combination of OT, physio, psychology, and speech-language services over time.
For custody issues, in cases where divorced parents are each required to consent on behalf of their teen’s participation in treatment, we require a copy of the court order.

We do not testify in legal proceedings unless subpoenaed.

  • Yes. Our occupational therapists in Edmonton are experienced with autistic, ADHD, and neurodivergent children and teens. We use neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based approaches and focus on regulation, sensory support, and realistic accommodations—not trying to “fix” your child’s personality.

  • Many extended health benefit plans cover services from a registered occupational therapist. Coverage varies by plan, so it’s best to check with your insurance provider. We can provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement.

  • Our primary services are clinic-based in Southwest Edmonton, with some parent consultation and follow-up available online, depending on your child’s needs and the therapist’s recommendation. We can collaborate with schools or daycare (with your consent) to support consistency across environments.

If your child is struggling with daily routines, big emotions, or sensory overwhelm, they are not “too much”—they just need support that fits their nervous system.

We’d be honoured to walk alongside your family.
